Frequently Asked Questions

Solar Panel FAQs

A photovoltaic module is a device that converts sunlight into electricity using photovoltaic cells. Multiple PV cells are connected in series and parallel, depending on the output of each module. In the case of PV modules that are combined, it becomes a solar panel.

Solar panels in India cost approximately between ₹60,000 and ₹1,00,000 for an average solar system of 1kW. The price of a system may vary depending on the type, technology, mounting structure, and more.

Average price of solar panel installation for home in India is ₹1,80,000 for 3kW grid-connected solar system. The Indian government provides a subsidy of ₹78,000 for solar systems of up to 10kW and some states like Uttar Pradesh provide subsidies of ₹30,000 for systems of up to 10kW capacity.

The Solar panel range starts at 10W and goes up to 575W, and the prices of the one solar panel range from ₹1,000 to ₹27,000, including GST.

For grid-connected solar installations up to 10kW, the government provides ₹78,000 in subsidy for residential solar panel installations. In order to avail benefits under the solar subsidy scheme, you must register on the official website of https://www.pmsuryaghar.gov.in/.

There are more than 32 crore homes in India, with 75% having less than 3kW sanctioned load, and the remaining homes having 3kW to 10kW sanctioned load. Any consumer who wants to install solar panels at their homes will need an average of 6 solar panels, but a single solar panel can be used to charge their batteries.

An energy efficient solar panel producing 1kW produces 4 to 5 units of electricity per day and 1,200 to 1,500 units each year. A number of factors affect the generation of PV modules, such as the shadow area, grid location, cleaning, location, direction, and more.

Rooftop Solar FAQs

In a solar rooftop system, the solar panels are installed in the roof of any residential, commercial, institutional and industrial buildings. This can be of two types (i) Solar Rooftop System with storage facility using battery, and (ii) Grid Connected Solar Rooftop System.

The average cost of grid connected rooftop solar systems is about Rs. 80 per watt or Rs. 8.0crore per MWp capacity.

There is a provision of Central Financial Assistance of 15% of the total cost, or Rs. 12 per watt or Rs. 1.20 crore per MWp, under the Grid Connected Rooftop and Small Solar Plants Programme of the Ministry. This CFA has been reduced from 30% to 15%.

Department of Financial Services has instructed all public sector banks to encourage home loan/home improvement loan seekers to install rooftop solar PV plants and include the cost of the system in their home loan proposals. So far, nine PSBs, namely Bank of India, Syndicate Bank, State Bank of India, Dena Bank, Central Bank of India, Punjab National Bank, Allahabad Bank, Indian Bank, and Indian Overseas Bank, have given instructions to extend the loan for Grid Interactive Rooftop Solar PV Plants as a home loan or home improvement loan.

The rooftop solar systems from 1 kWp upto 500 kWp or in combination can be set up on the roofs.

About 10sq.m area is required to set up 1 kWp grid connected rooftop solar system.

In case the grid fails, the solar power has to be fully utilized or stopped immediately feeding to the grid so as to safe-guard any grid person/technician from getting shock (electrocuted) while working on the grid for maintenance etc. This feature is termed as ‘Islanding Protection’.

20 State/UT Regulators from Andhra Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Delhi, Gujarat, Haryana, Karnataka, Kerala, Odisha, Punjab, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, West Bengal, Andaman & Nicobar, Chandigarh, Dadra & Nagar Haveli, Daman & Diu, Lakshadweep, Pondicherry, and Goa have so far issued these regulations for net-metering/gross metering.
